Nepal is one of the most visually extraordinary filming destinations on Earth. The Himalayas, ancient temples, terraced hillsides, and vibrant city life create a visual diversity matched almost nowhere else. For international film crews, Nepal offers production value that money can't buy elsewhere — but using drones here requires navigating a permit process that trips up most foreign productions. This guide explains everything you need to know.

CAAN Drone Permits for Foreign Film Crews

The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) regulates all drone operations, including those by foreign film crews. International productions must obtain a CAAN film drone permit before any aerial shooting. The process requires: a registered local operator (foreign operators cannot apply independently), equipment specifications for every drone being used, a detailed flight location list with GPS coordinates, production company documentation, and proof of insurance.

Standard processing time is 10–21 working days. Rush processing (5–7 days) is available for an additional fee. GarudX handles the complete permit application process on behalf of international productions — we've processed over 40 permits to date, with a 100% approval record.

For shooting in restricted zones — near airports, within national parks, in military-sensitive areas — additional clearances are required from the Nepal Army, relevant park authorities, or the Ministry of Home Affairs. GarudX manages these multi-agency approvals as part of our full-service package.

Our Equipment: FPV to 6K Cinema

GarudX operates Nepal's most comprehensive aerial production fleet. For international productions, we offer:

FPV Cinema (our specialty): GarudX-built FPV platforms carrying GoPro Hero 13 Black or Insta360 X4. 210+ km/h top speed for dynamic chase shots and impossible angles. We've executed FPV sequences inside temples, through market alleyways, and at speeds that no conventional drone can match.

6K Aerial: DJI Inspire 3 with Zenmuse X9-6K for broadcast and streaming-quality aerial footage. Smooth, stabilized wide shots, precise subject tracking, and a 3-axis gimbal system capable of -130° to +40° tilt range.

Heavy Lift Cinema: Our custom Helion platform carries mirrorless cameras (Sony FX3, RED Komodo) for productions requiring sensor size and dynamic range beyond what DJI's cameras provide.

High Altitude Specialist Platforms: GarudX's custom-built platforms operate reliably above 5,000m — tested at Everest Base Camp (5,364m). For Himalaya shoots that other companies simply can't execute, we're the only operator in Nepal with proven high-altitude capability.

Production Credits

GarudX has provided aerial production services for: Coca-Cola Nepal (commercial campaign, 2024), Vianet Communications (brand campaign), Panchayat (Nepali feature film, 2023), multiple international documentary productions, and government campaign work for Visit Nepal. We work with international DOPs and directors accustomed to world-class production standards.

Full-Service for Foreign Crews

Foreign productions working with GarudX get a complete aerial package: permit management, licensed operators, equipment, safety briefings, and location scouting. We're familiar with Nepal's most cinematic shooting locations — from the ghats of Pashupatinath to the ridge lines of Annapurna — and can advise on shot design based on location access, lighting windows, and permit requirements.

For productions with tight schedules, our team's knowledge of CAAN processes means we can often accelerate approvals through established relationships. We've turned around permits in as little as 3 working days for urgent projects.

Pricing & Booking

GarudX aerial production services are priced per project based on shoot days, equipment required, and permit complexity. We quote in USD for international productions. Half-day rates start from USD 400 for single-operator FPV, with full cinema packages (Inspire 3, 2 operators, permit included) from USD 900/day.
